教科文组织邀请媒体机构庆祝2018年世界新闻自由日

　　Since 1993, when the United Nations’ General Assembly proclaimed 3 May, World Press Freedom Day, this occasion has been an opportunity to celebrate the fundamental human right to freedom of expression, reflect upon the challenges press freedom is facing, and to develop initiatives to address these challenges.

　　自1993年联合国大会宣布将每年的5月3日定为世界新闻自由日以来，这一天已成为庆祝表达自由的基本人权、反思新闻自由当前挑战和制定计划解决挑战的契机。

　　The global celebration of World Press Freedom Day will take place from 2 to 3 May in Accra (Ghana), jointly organized by UNESCO and the Government of the Republic of Ghana. UNESCO and its partners are also planning commemorative events on 3 May in different countries around the world. The 2018 edition of World Press Freedom Day will focus on the topic “Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and the Rule of Law”.

　　2018年世界新闻自由日全球庆祝活动将于5月2日至3日于加纳首都阿克拉举行。本次庆祝活动由联合国教科文组织和加纳共和国政府联合举办。此外，联合国教科文组织及其合作伙伴也正在全球不同国家策划5月3日的庆祝活动。2018年世界新闻自由日将关注“让权力接受监督：媒体、司法和法治”这一主题。

　　Over the last quarter of a century, World Press Freedom Day has served as a reminder that a free press and access to quality information are essential to provide citizens with the means to hold their government accountable and hence to empower democracy. World Press Freedom Day has sensitized the public to the importance of journalists’ mission, which is still too often carried out in the face of censorship, harassment, detentions, attacks, and, at times even, at the expense of their own life.

　　在过去的二十五年间，世界新闻自由日一直在提醒公众自由的新闻与高质量信息的获取是公民问责政府，从而为民主赋权的重要手段。世界新闻自由日还使公众了解到记者职责的重要性，他们在履行其职责的过程中往往要面对审查、骚扰、拘留、攻击，有时甚至是生命危险。

　　UNESCO invites media organisations in China to join us in raising awareness about these critical issues through media coverage on World Press Freedom Day. Media contribution to this endeavour would be crucial and could include publishing front-page stories, articles, and interviews on these topics, creating dedicated multimedia content, or providing social media exposure under the following hashtags: #worldpressfreedomday and #worldpressfreedom.
